Houston Astros Roster Report 2009-05-08
--C Humberto Quintero, who suffered a strained right shoulder April 24, will begin a four-game rehab assignment Friday with Class AAA Round Rock. Barring a setback, he'll be activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday for the start of a series against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Quintero made a combined 30 throws to second and third base while passing his final test to head on the rehab.

"I feel real good," he said. "I'm ready for the rehab. I feel 100 percent with my shoulder. I just have a little tightness near my neck, but I'm fine."

--RHP Doug Brocail had an MRI on his left hamstring, which revealed a tear that will keep him out of action for at least a month and perhaps the season if he ultimately needs surgery.

GM Ed Wade said Dr. David Lintner informed him that one of the three hamstring tendons tore off the bone Sunday when Brocail was injured at Turner Field.

"It is something that you can rehab probably in excess of a month," Wade said. "If you were to require surgery to reattach the tendon, it would probably be the season. Obviously Doug is opting to go the more conservative route and try to rehab it."

--RHP Roy Oswalt continued making progress with his strained right index finger. Oswalt expects to start on schedule Sunday, and he'll take a pain killer on the index finger if he needs it.

--1B Lance Berkman, who was starting to show some life at the plate this week, took a step back and was 0-for-5 with four strikeouts Thursday.

RHP Roy Oswalt (bone bruise on right index finger) left the May 5 game. He expects to make his May 10 start.

C Humberto Quintero (strained right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 25. He will begin a rehab assignment May 8 with Class AAA Round Rock, and he is expected to be activated May 12.

RHP Brandon Backe (strained left side muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list March 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Round Rock on April 27, and he moved his rehab to Class AA Corpus Christi on May 3. He could return to the Astros in late May.

RHP Jose Valverde (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 27. He had fluid drained from the calf April 30 and May 1, and he might be out until early June.

RHP Doug Brocail (torn left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list May 4. He is out at least a month, and if he ultimately requires surgery, he would miss the rest of the season.

INF Aaron Boone (open-heart surgery on March 26) went on the 15-day disabled list March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 10. He was uncertain whether he'd resume his career.
