Houston Astros Roster Report 2009-05-04
As they waited for 1B Lance Berkman to regain his stroke, the Astros were trying to figure out a way to go on without star closer Jose Valverde. The rotation was set to welcome RHP Brian Moehler off the disabled list, but it remains to be seen if he will be an upgrade over RHP Felipe Paulino, who was moved to the bullpen. Manager Cecil Cooper was still waiting for his middle of the order to start clicking as expected.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Roy Oswalt threw only 17 pitches in his scoreless first inning before he was pulled because of a long rain delay Saturday, so he'll come back on short rest and start Tuesday against the Nationals.

"He's fine," manager Cecil Cooper said of Oswalt. "It was just too long to go back out there. I mean, it's just way too long. When you get into the 20- to 30-minute range, that's way too long enough. We just didn't want to risk."

Oswalt said he is treating his 17-pitch outing Saturday as regular work between starts.

RHP Russ Ortiz, who was scheduled to start Monday, was available out of the bullpen Sunday to help a day after five relievers combined for eight innings of one-run ball. RHP Brian Moehler, who was scheduled to come off the disabled list and start Tuesday, will now start Monday against the Nationals.

--3B Jeff Keppinger, who bats right-handed and usually starts against left-handers, started Sunday against Braves LHP Jo-Jo Reyes. He went 0-for-1 with two walks. Manager Cecil Cooper said he likely would start Keppinger at third again Monday against Washington LHP Scott Olsen.

Cooper also said he would try to start OF Jason Michaels on Monday.

--1B Lance Berkman picked up a hit that originally was ruled an error. A day after Chipper Jones was tagged for an error in the top of the seventh inning on Berkman's grounder, the official scorer removed the error Sunday against Jones and credited Berkman with an infield single to third. Berkman had only one hit over his final 23 at-bats in April, but with the scoring change, he was officially 3-for-10, .300, after his first two games in May.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Doug Brocail (strained left hamstring) was hurt May 3, and he is expected to land on the 15-day disabled list May 4.

RHP Chris Sampson (deep bone bruise on right ankle) was hurt May 3. He is day-to-day.

RHP Jose Valverde (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 27. He had fluid drained from the calf April 30 and May 1, and he might be out until early June.

C Humberto Quintero (strained right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 25. He resumed throwing April 28, and he might be activated as soon as he is eligible.
