--C Humberto Quintero, who is on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder, will start shoulder exercises Tuesday for the first time since he was injured in a collision with Milwaukee's Mike Cameron on Friday.

"I'll start moving my shoulder (Tuesday)," he said. "And I think by Wednesday or Thursday I'll be allowed to start playing catch. I'm feeling better, but the right side of my neck is still real sore."

--LHP Wandy Rodriguez (1-2, 1.80 ERA) will try to extend his string of quality starts to five. Heading into Monday's games, he was one of only six pitchers with four quality starts this season.

--RHP Brandon Backe gave up one run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout over four innings at Class AAA Round Rock in his first rehab start. He threw 38 of his 63 pitches for strikes in his first game since he strained his left intercostal muscle in early March.

--SS Miguel Tejada collided with the Reds' Chris Dickerson in the fourth inning. Dickerson exited after the fifth inning with concussion-like symptoms, but Tejada played the rest of the game with a swollen left eye and delivered a crucial single in the ninth.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Jose Valverde (bruised right ankle, strained right calf) was hurt April 21 but remained in the game. He was unavailable April 22-24 and returned to action April 25, then had a setback and was out again on April 27. He was expected to be out at least another two or three days.

RHP Doug Brocail (strained right rotator cuff) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 11. He pitched a simulated inning April 24, and he was activated April 26.

C Humberto Quintero (strained right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 25.

RHP Brian Moehler (strained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Round Rock on April 24.

RHP Brandon Backe (strained left side muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list March 27. He will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Round Rock on April 27.

INF Aaron Boone (open-heart surgery on March 26) went on the 15-day disabled list March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 10. He was uncertain whether he'd resume his career.
