Houston Astros Roster Report 2009-04-24

Houston Astros Roster Report 2009-04-24
LHP Wandy Rodriguez appears to be the front-line starter hardly anybody thought the Astros had to complement ace RHP Roy Oswalt. With seven scoreless innings Saturday against the Reds, Rodriguez has three consecutive quality starts to begin the season. With Rodriguez and Oswalt at the top of the rotation, suddenly the Astros' weak rotation doesn't seem to be as vulnerable.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Doug Brocail, who is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, persuaded the Astros to let him skip the rehab assignment he was scheduled to make at Class AAA Round Rock.

Brocail, who has been on the DL with a right rotator cuff strain, will remain in Houston and throw a 20-pitch simulated inning.

"They're just going to have me throw here (Friday) because if I throw a three-pitch inning, you don't get anything out of it," he said. "I'll throw 20 pitches to hitters, just like (Wednesday)."

--RHP Brian Moehler, on the disabled list with a sprained right knee, will make a rehab start for Class AAA Round Rock on Friday.

"As long as I feel good, that's all I care about," he said. "I could care less about the results as long as I feel good."

He'll try to reach a 75-85 pitch count, but he's uncertain if he'll need to make more than one rehab start.

--RHP Geoff Geary, who has suffered two losses already in the homestand, was used in the seventh inning Thursday as the Astros tried to keep within a run of the Dodgers. Matt Kemp greeted Geary with a leadoff infield single. Casey Blake followed with an RBI double to right, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Manager Cecil Cooper admits that he has not seen the velocity Geary showed last year.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Jose Valverde (bruised right ankle, strained right calf) was hurt April 21 but remained in the game. He was unavailable April 22-23, and he is day-to-day.

RHP Brian Moehler (strained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. He is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Round Rock on April 24.

RHP Doug Brocail (strained right rotator cuff) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 11. He will pitch a simulated inning April 24, and he might come off the disabled list April 26.

RHP Brandon Backe (strained left side muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list March 27. He will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Round Rock on April 27.

INF Aaron Boone (open-heart surgery on March 26) went on the 15-day disabled list March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 10. He was uncertain whether he'd resume his career.
