Houston Astros Notes, Quotes 2008-07-29
--With the non-waiver trade deadline approaching, general manager Ed Wade brought his top three professional scouts -- Fred Nelson, Matt Galante and Paul Ricciarini -- to Minute Maid Park on Monday.

"We've cycled back today and talked to just about every club, just trying to get the lay of the land," Wade said. "It's got the potential to be quiet. There's a chance we might be able to get something or some things done. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if it stayed quiet."

--As a policy, Wade doesn't divulge his current conversations with clubs, nor confirm or deny trade rumors. For that reason, he wouldn't confirm or deny if the Boston Red Sox have inquired about Miguel Tejada.

"No, I'm not going into details on things," he said.

With that said, several Astros have drawn interest.

"We've had inquiries on quite a number of players," Wade said. "And I think to a certain extent there are certain players on our club that you don't get inquiries. It's not because they're not good players but because other teams recognize the level of importance they have."

--RHP Roy Oswalt had a successful return from the disabled list, lasting more than one inning for the first time since he strained his left hip on June 30. He limited the damage to Adam Dunn's grand slam while giving the Astros five decent innings before turning it over to the bullpen.

Oswalt held the Reds to seven hits and four runs with one walk and five strikeouts while throwing 54 of his 74 pitches for strikes in only his second start since June 30.

He was activated from the disabled list and made his first start since he lasted only one inning after aggravating his strained left hip on July 11.

--Tim Byrdak (one inning), Geoff Geary (1 2/3 innings), Wesley Wright (one-third) and Jose Valverde (one inning) combined for four scoreless innings of relief.

--RHP Jose Valverde threw a scoreless ninth, tying for the National League lead with his 27th save.

--1B Lance Berkman surpassed Jimmy Wynn and moved into sole possession of third place on the franchise's all-time walks list with his 848th career walk in the first inning.

--Geoff Blum is hitting .500 (6-for-12) with three home runs and eight RBI over the last four games.

BY THE NUMBERS: 50 -- Errors committed by the Astros this year through 104 games, fewest in the National League this season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Everything that can (bleeping) go wrong for us is going wrong." -- Relief pitcher Doug Brocail after the Astros allowed four late runs and lost 6-4 to the Brewers on July 26.
