Houston Astros Notes, Quotes 2009-05-08
--SS Miguel Tejada hit his first home run of the season Thursday, ending a streak of 173 at-bats without a home run, dating back to last Sept. 10.

--RHP Russ Ortiz, who suffered the loss after giving up three runs on six hits with three walks over 2 1/3 innings, was surprised when manager Cecil Cooper yanked him Thursday.

"I was thinking, 'Why are they coming to get me?'" Ortiz said.

Cooper insists his bullpen isn't worn out enough to just let a starter suffer through an outing.

"When do you just sacrifice the game and let them just go?" Cooper said. "I don't think you just leave a guy out there to die like that. That's not the way I do things. I thought we had a chance to hold the game there, and we actually did. We did a great job."

--INF Aaron Boone, who was expected to platoon at third base this season with Geoff Blum, visited with the Astros for the first time since he left the club in March to have open-heart surgery.

"I feel good," Boone said Wednesday, one day shy of the six-week mark since his surgery. "I feel a lot better than I did two weeks ago, and it's definitely getting better all the time. The fact that I'm able to be here for a couple of days has had me smiling since I got off the plane. Just great to come back and see everyone."

--C Ivan Rodriguez, a near lock for the Hall of Fame, had two passed balls Wednesday to allow runs.

"It was a bad day for me behind the plate," Rodriguez said. "I'm human. I feel like I was jumping a little bit behind the plate, trying to reach for the pitch instead of waiting for the pitch and receive it. For some reason today I was a little anxious and anticipating and pushing a little bit. It happens."

BY THE NUMBERS: 9 -- Assists for Astros outfielders, tops in the major leagues through May 3. Houston had four from LF Carlos Lee, three from RF Hunter Pence and two from Bourn.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "There's no formula and there's nothing you can do. All you can do is show up and work on the things that you feel like you're doing wrong and watch video, take extra batting practice. Then you show up and you just try to battle and do something positive every day to try to help the team win." -- 1B Lance Berkman, on his attempts to shake a slump.
