Houston Astros Notes, Quotes 2008-11-29
--SS Miguel Tejada is working out five days a week near his Fort Lauderdale home at the Perfect Competition training center.

"This is going to be very good," the All-Star said. "That's why I'm preparing well. It's not because I'm on a free agent year. Last year I worked hard, too, but last year with all the things that happened off the field, it was a lot."

--LHP Tyler Lumsden was acquired by the Astros from the Royals in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Lumsden, 25, went 3-13 with a 7.21 ERA in 28 games, including 18 starts, for Class AAA Omaha in 2008. He is currently playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League for the Gigantes de Carolina and was 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA through four games (three starts).

"Tyler's numbers weren't good this year, but our guys like his arm," Houston GM Ed Wade said. "He's a big, strong lefty, and he's only 25 years old. He has remaining options, so we'll get him into Kissimmee, evaluate him and give him a chance to compete. At the very least, Tyler provides us with some more young depth."

--RHP Chris Sampson, who had surgery on his right elbow in Oct. 1, continues to make progress in his rehab and remains optimistic about being ready for spring training.

--C J.R. Towles began playing in the Dominican Republic winter league. With C Humberto Quintero set to open on the major leaguer roster and the club looking for somebody to share time with Quintero, Towles likely will start the season at Class AAA Round Rock a year after breaking camp as the expected starter.

--The Astros continue to negotiate with RHP Doug Brocail, their top priority to re-sign for the bullpen. But in case the veteran opts to sign elsewhere, the Astros have already started flirting some of the other relievers on the free agent market.

BY THE NUMBERS: 7.21 ERA -- LHP Tyler Lumsden's ERA last year in Class AAA. Lumsden was recently acquired from the Royals.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think inside, everybody wants to know if there's any truth to this (trade rumor). Really, for the most part I really can't worry about it. It's not like I think about it every day. I know if I get a phone call, I'm leaving. If I don't, great. I really enjoyed Houston last year especially. It was a tough year with all the injuries. I feel if I had stayed healthy, I would have got to 30 home runs. I didn't even get 400 at-bats. You get another 100 to 130 at-bats, there's no telling where I would have ended up." -- 3B Ty Wigginton.
