Houston Astros Notes, Quotes 2008-10-30
--C J.R. Towles is expected to play winter ball in the Dominican Republic sometime in December. Towles, who was a flop after being given the Opening Day catcher's nod in 2008, is getting married in November and will head out shortly thereafter.

--RHP Roy Oswalt, who co-owns a hunting ranch with Jake Peavy, has convinced his friend to come to Houston. Now it's up to the Padres to trade to Peavy, who has said the Astros are his No. 1 choice. Peavy, who has a no-trade clause, has given the Padres a list of teams he'd like to get traded to, including the Astros.

--RHP Doug Brocail is still hopeful he can join the Astros next year. Brocail didn't have his option for 2009 picked up by the club, but considering his family, which includes five daughters, lives in the Houston area, Brocail made it clear he'd like to return.

--LHP Wesley Wright was one of six rookies the Astros used last season. Wright appeared in 71 games, tying the club record for a rookie left-hander. Al Osuna set the mark in 1991.

--SS Miguel Tejada will be entering the final season of his contract with the Astros in 2009. Tejada is scheduled to make more than $13 million, which is much more than he could command via free agency. For that reason, Tejada has said he will not opt out of his contract and will remain with the Astros one more year.

BY THE NUMBERS: 12 -- Consecutive years in which the Astros have posted a better winning percentage after the All-Star break than they have in the first half.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Obviously, we're not pleased with the end result with regard to not making the postseason, but we're pleased with the performance of the club the second half of the season. I think it's a clear indication we have good club here, and at the same time there are obvious things we can do to build upon. I think the primary issues that we've got in front of us on the front burner are trying to retain the players we think have important roles here." -- General manager Ed Wade on his offseason plans.
