First baseman Lance Berkman and shortstop Miguel Tejada made strong showings in the first All-Star vote tally released.

Berkman, a four-time All-Star, is leading in the race to start at first base for the National League at the July 15 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. With 329,743 votes, he leads fellow perennial All-Stars Albert Pujols (317,317) of the Cardinals and Derrek Lee (283,515) of the Cubs.

With 256,613 votes, Tejada is second in the race for the starting shortstop's job, trailing the Marlins' Hanley Ramirez (268,386) while leading the Mets' Jose Reyes.

"Those are two pretty terrific young players right there," manager Cecil Cooper said of Ramirez and Reyes. "And that says a lot about what Tejada has done, when you think about it. There's two young superstars, and he's right there with them, neck and neck. This is a veteran who's changed leagues and all that. That shows a lot about what he's doing. That's terrific for him. I would love nothing more than to see him be the starter."

Left fielder Carlos Lee, who entered Wednesday leading all NL outfielders with 45 RBIs, was seventh among the league's outfielders in total votes with 205,247. Hunter Pence was 10th with 168,005. Michael Bourn was 15th with 141,940.

Considering that closer Jose Valverde leads the league in saves and has a chance to be picked on the players' ballot, the Astros may very well have four players at the 79th All-Star Game.

"You figure Valverde, you figure Berkman and then you figure Tejada and one of those other guys (Lee and Pence)," Cooper said. "That'd be terrific. It will be in New York. To get that type of (publicity), that would be great. What if we got two guys as starters? Work on it, man. Put the pencil to it and get them started."

CARDINALS 6, ASTROS 1: The Astros lost because they couldn't mount much of an attack against Adam Wainwright, who gave up only one run in eight innings. It didn't help matters that Wandy Rodriguez was pitching with only his fastball being effective.
