The MRI taken on Astros closer Jose Valverde's strained right calf Wednesday in Houston revealed hematomas, which were drained Thursday, and he may need a follow-up procedure as well, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Valverde was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, exactly a week after he strained the calf lunging for the ball after he was drilled in the ankle on a hard grounder by the Dodgers' Orlando Hudson. Valverde pitched Saturday and Sunday, blowing a save opportunity Saturday before converting a save Sunday despite aggravating the injury fielding a sacrifice bunt by the Brewers' Craig Counsell.
The NL save leader each of the past two seasons, Valverde is 2-for-4 in save chances this year with a 5.63 ERA.
