Astrosportal.com | Houston Astros News, astros Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Catcher Max Sapp, the Astros' first-round pick in 2006, had a seizure March 10 night at home. He returned home March 12 after being hospitalized for more than 36 hours.
"He's doing good," Sapp's mother, Missy, said. "We're at home, and he's asleep. He's doing really good." Sapp, who landed in the hospital on Dec. 11 with viral meningitis, stopped breathing three times during his near-month stay in the hospital during the winter. Although the latest trip was scary, Missy and Max Sapp didn't seem as worried because the seizures were likely side effects of the medication he was on, Phenobarbital, they say.
"Phenobarbital is a seizure medicine," Missy Sapp said. "He takes two seizure medications. You don't just stop taking it. You have to wean off. It's just a little bump in the road and he'll chill out for three weeks and we'll go from there."
Max Sapp, 21, had been catching bullpen sessions and doing some light hitting exercises in minor league camp at Osceola County Stadium lately.
He's not likely to return to baseball action until April, at the earliest.
"We got to just start weaning down again later," Missy Sapp said. "He's just got to not do anything strenuous for three weeks, and he'll be fine. We're just glad."
Sapp has been ordered to take it easy, and his mother vows to monitor him closely and then see what the doctors suggest in three weeks.
"You got to pray for patience," she said. "Max loves baseball and he wants to play. He will drive you nuts to go swing a bat. I just tell him, 'You're going to chill.' We're going to read and watch movies, some down time and start over."
