Games of the Day
Apr. 26, 2009 (Baseball Musings delivered by Newstex ) --

The Twins try to bury the Indians in last place as they go for a sweep of Cleveland with Glen Perkins facing Aaron Laffey. These are two of the best starters on the staffs in 2009. Perkins, another Twins pitcher who refuses to walk batters, added the new dimension of limiting hits as well. Laffey limits the oppositions power (2 doubles in 10 hits, no home runs) while allowing just one hit in eleven at bats with runners in scoring position.

Jordan Zimmermann makes his second start for the Nationals, trying to up his percentage of the teams wins from 33% to 50%. The most impressive thing about his debut as the high percentage of strikes he threw, 51 of 72 pitches. Oliver Perez takes the hill for the Mets. Perez is not finding the strike zone much as hes walked 12 in 15 innings. The good news is he also struck out 15, so he still can fool batters.

Manny Parra versus Russ Ortiz gets my vote for slugfest of the day. Parras made three bad starts so far, with eight of the sixteen hits he allowed going for extra bases. Ortiz has struck out 11 and walked 11 in 13 2/3 innings. Parity between walks and strikeouts is never a good thing.

The Cubs try to even their season series with the Cardinals as Rich Harden faces Todd Wellemeyer. Both are off to rough starts. Harden has struck out more than three times the batters he walked, but thats misleading. Hes walked eight in 15 innings, and thats too high. With 26 K, he should have a strikeout rate five or six times his walk rate. Hes also been hurt by three solo home runs and batters going four for nine with runners in scoring position. Wellemeyer is simply very hittable. He doesnt get a chance to walk batters as theyve seen pitches they liked and knocked out 29 hits in 17 innings, good for a .403 BA.

The battle of the homonyms moves to Anaheim as Jarrod Washburn takes on Jared Weaver. They met eleven days again with Jarrod out pitching Jered as the Mariners took home an 11-3 win. A Seattle victory today make the Mariners 5-1 against the Angels keeps LAnaheim in last place, and increases the distance between the two teams to 6 1/2 games.

The Pirates and Padres both find themselves in second place in their respective divisions as they play the rubber game of their three-game series. Ross Ohlendorf visits Jake Peavy. Ross is doing a good job holding the opposition to singles. Hes giving up few walks and no home runs, so the opposition needs three hits to score a run. Peavy hit a rough patch after two good starts to begin the season. Hes allowed nine earned runs in his last 11 innings, walking nearly as many as he struck out.

ESPN brings you the Yankees and Red Sox tonight, as Andy Pettitte and Dustin Masterson try to give their bullpens a rest. Theres been plenty of drama in the series so far, expect more tonight.

Enjoy!
