CINCINNATI (AP) - The Houston Astros put closer Jose Valverde on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained calf that has bothered him for a week.

Houston called up right-hander Jeff Fulchino from Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday night to take his place. Fulchino signed a minor league deal on Feb. 7 after appearing in a dozen games for Kansas City last season.
Valverde strained his calf while chasing a ball that bounced off his right ankle last week. After sitting out a couple of games, he pitched the ninth inning Sunday and the calf swelled up again overnight. Valverde had 44 saves for Houston last season.
